When Smooth is Covering Up Lies

Right after I saw the Vicepresidential debate, I turned off the TV and posted a brief note.
I prefer not to write at night so I kept it short.
I didn’t read any opinions from the various journalists, just wrote my piece.
It was quite a surprise, then, when the day after, I found plenty notices praising the performance of Mr Vance.
I was stunned.
In my piece written right after, I was tempted to say that Mr Vance had lied many times but I refrained.
But seeing that so many people believed him I have changed my mind
I’ll start with the most outrageous lie — the one about the assault on Capitol Hill on January 6th 2021.
It came at the end of the debate when Mr Vance denied any wrongdoing on the part of Trump.
For a moment I was in disbelief.
Then Walz challenged him and rightfully raised the ominous implications of that action for the future of our country to which Vance glibly replied ‘That’s so rich of you, Tim, when Trump peacefully transferred power to Biden later that month.’
Yes, he did, because he was stopped.
Trump transferred power because Mike Pence didn’t consent to the tampering with the electoral ballots as Trump had instructed him to do.
That was a heroic action on Pence’s part, for which some Trump supporters have called him a traitor.
Vance lied blatantly, smoothly, with a slight arching of his eyebrow and just a hint of disdain for Tim Walz for daring to bring up the question.
