They knew that the odds would be stacked against them in the recent presidential election, July 28th, so they figured a way to have some of their people at every polling booth with the explicit aim of getting proof, digital and physical, of what choice voters had made.
It would be their way of countering what was certain to be an attempt by Maduro’s government to steal the election again.
And then they campaigned hard to appeal to everyone. ‘Get out and vote!’
And Venezuelans responded.
And Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate, running in place of Maria Corina Machado, the leader of the movement but disqualified by Maduro from being a candidate, beat out Maduro by a wide margin.
The opposition had tapped into the profound dissatisfaction of the Venezuelan people who had seen a never before exodus of their people, estimated at close to 8 million and growing, and now had the proof of it.
It was a masterful stroke.
Surely most of the soldiers looking the other way while representatives of the opposition gathered the evidence, knew of someone who had emigrated, was incarcerated or had been killed.
The opposition had bet on that possibility and they were right.
Now the task moves to convincing the international community to agree with the evidence and support them. Many have stepped up.
