They should not be linked, but that is what an irresponsible Republican party in congress is doing, holding back approval of funds to sustain Ukraine’s heroic defense of their land against the murderous Putin.
Thousands and thousands of Ukrainians have died in defense of their land. Men, women and children. And more will perish.
Ukrainians’ sacrifices are enormous. Their capacity for suffering seemingly unlimited.
And yet a myopic Republican leadership in congress says to them, ‘we won’t be helping you out unless Biden fixes the immigration problem in our borders to our liking. We won’t be helping you defend against Putin’s killing of your people until the democratic party takes steps to stop miserable people from crossing our southern border and polluting our precious blood.’
And so the Republican party encourages a man like Governor Abbott in Texas to keep sending busloads of new arrivals to New York and now New Jersey. As if saying, ‘let these border crossers taint your blood but not ours.’
What the myopic and callous Republican majority in congress misses is the enormously transformative capacity of our society.
We are deeply flawed but our nation is capable of transforming the new arrival. Provided they work hard and put up with all the imperfections of our system.
But if they do, they will come out ahead. And they or their children will have a chance to shine in our country, a chance they did not have in their countries…
