In the little town of Butler, Pennsylvania — now in the history books.
A 20 y/o from nearby Pittsburgh, got up on the roof of a building adjacent to Trump’s stage, carrying his rifle (an AR-15 semiautomatic), and unnoticed by the secret service protecting the former president (how could that happen?), set himself up and shot at him a few minutes into his speech.
The bullet struck his right ear. An inch and a half inside and Trump would’ve been dead.
Calls to blame the assassination attempt on democrats quickly poured in.
One senator who’s a possible VP choice — a shining light of present Republicanism — said that the attempt was the fault of democrats for all the talk against Trump.
No, senator, you’re wrong.
And no, we don’t think Trump is the new messiah.
A former attorney general jumped in, too, blaming democrats for stirring hate by calling Trump an existential threat to democracy.
Well, dear sir, Trump is that. And, no — no matter what the Supreme Court says — Trump did try to overthrow the government of the United States on January 6th 2021.
Luckily Mike Pence, then vicepresident, didn’t go along with the attempt.
As for the toxic language that has permeated this campaign, it all started with Trump.
But toxic language is dangerous since not everyone is able to process it.
Some people just take it as it is. And then act on it. And it can happen on both sides.
