As simple as that.
To embrace him is to say, ‘yes, the 2020 election was stolen.’
‘Yes, an assault on the Capitol needed to happen.’
‘Yes, celebrities are entitled to grab women.’
‘Yes, White Supremacy needs to come back.’
‘And, yes, the great New York businessman now has a formula to end the war in one day.’
He said it the other day and why shouldn’t we believe him?
‘And, no, we should not try to insist on the value of freedom, to encourage other people to fight for it.’
All nations are prone to collective political mistakes.
For America, Trump was a colossal one.
To reelect him would be to say to the world, ‘We do not wish to learn from our mistakes. That’s how exceptional we are.’
The world will laugh at us.
They will still keep doing business with us because we have a strong economy and a heck of a lot to offer, but they will be right to say, ‘America’s not recognizing their mistakes is telling us something about their future. Maybe they’re not up to it anymore. Maybe the moral and political decay has begun. Leading the world has become too difficult a task for them.’
But there are sectors in the Republican party who clearly see the folly of Trump winning their primaries. We have to trust that the core of the party will not be taken over by the extremist views.
