In tonight’s vicepresidential debate in New York, democrat Walz showed himself a good fighter.
He’s got the oomph, can take a punch and go the distance.
His opponent, JD Vance, had the difficult task of having to defend Trump. He showed dexterity in addressing difficult topics where he might incur the wrath of the former president, plus he is on record as having disagreed with Trump before he converted.
Walz impressed me as the more visceral of the two.
One of Vance’s strategies throughout the debate was to speak of Harris as if she had had a strong voice in the Biden administration.
She had a voice, true, but her viewpoint may or may not have been consequential.
But that’s true for most vicepresidents.
I’m sure Mike Pence’s opinion was of little importance as VP to Trump.
Vance is smoother than Trump, and the former president could learn a thing or two from him.
But Trump’s style is unique. Though that didn’t keep him from losing to Harris.
Was there a clear winner?
In boxing terms, both went the distance and Walz won on points.
Not as decisive a difference as in the contest between Harris and Trump.
Walz’s performance revealed something else about Harris.
She can make a good pick.
There were a good number of contenders running for the position and she chose well.
Additionally, Walz brings a good deal of administrative knowledge to the post.
I think he’s presidential, which enriches the ticket.
