The Tariffs on Our Neighbors Won’t Stop Americans from Poisoning Themselves
Our President did it. Kept his promise. Imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico to stop the flow of the highly addictive fentanyl into our country. (I will treat the immigration issue separately)
But that won’t stop Americans poisoning themselves.
Fentanyl or no Fentanyl, they’ll keep using drugs unless radical steps are taken.
A drug abuser will find something else if their drug of choice is not around.
Anything will do. And that goes for drug abusers everywhere.
What needs to be done is to address the need for the mood altering, reality denying substances.
And you do that by improving the drug abuser’s sense of who they are.
You do that by working with them to improve their ability to communicate with themselves and others. So they learn to value who they are rather than pollute their minds and hearts with toxic substances. So they, too, can fulfill their potential as human beings.
Mr President, you missed the boat here.
But this decision of yours tells us so much more about you and your help.
The tariffs are taxes on Americans, who will have to pay for the increased costs. One of our governors has underscored that reality.
Mexico and Canada have announced tariffs of their own on our exports in retaliation.
Hardship will follow.
As a member of the American chamber of commerce in Mexico said, ‘America first is not America alone.’
