The Profound Unease from the Loss of National Purpose

Trump knows something is wrong but he does not know what.
I assure you that not once, has Trump thought of our national malaise being the result of the loss of our collective purpose.
I say that because his actions speak clearly.
Trump speaks of dollars and cents. He does not speak of the moral malaise stemming from our nation not strongly affirming the pursuit of liberty and the sacrifices required.
What made us unique in the last hundred years plus, was our determination to put our economic and military might to the service of the cause of the freedom of man, both here at home and abroad.
Sometimes we have erred but, mostly, we have won.
Joined in the effort by other nations in the West, today Japan is a democracy partly because of us. And so, too, South Korea. Two brilliant nations which, through their efforts, have become stars in our world.
And Europe is not under the Nazi boot because of the effort we spearheaded.
It took an enormous sacrifice to affirm liberty against fascism and it paid off.
We also led the effort to counter communism and the dissolution of the Soviet empire.
Today, the world is better because of our efforts.
Still, we have had our failures.
In Vietnam, we allied ourselves with a corrupt government that failed to summon the support of the people.
In Afghanistan and Iraq we went to their assistance but failed to spark in their populations the drive to…
