They are convinced that their system is the answer to the world’s problems.
They have found the one way to facilitate the full development of human beings and they are now bent on exporting their great discovery.
Never mind that they didn’t consult the other 1.3 billion Chinese because there is no freedom of speech in that land, or free elections or the right to not be under constant surveillance.
In the span of 40 years they have risen economically and militarily like no other nation has. They deserve credit for that.
But did opening their markets to the input of Western technology and ideas make a difference?
‘Why, yes, of course,’ they will say, but ‘we could’ve done it all on our own’.
‘We just needed to keep rereading Mao’s collected thoughts and now Xi Jinping’s. That has showed us the way.’
Oh, yes, indeed.
‘Sure, forcing western companies to share their technology in exchange for access to 1.4 billion customers may have helped but we, the communist party, could’ve done it by ourselves. Something about our collective wisdom.’
‘Do we consistently carry out cyberattacks to steal technological and scientific information from the West? Why, yes, but it’s only to confirm the discoveries we’ve made on our own.’
