The former governor of New Jersey announced yesterday that he is stepping out and challenging Trump for the party’s nomination.
He has positioned himself as the one candidate willing to call Trump an angry and failed man and to describe his term in office as a failure.
We were waiting for someone to be so bold. Someone willing to say, ‘let us not drink the Kool Aid from Mar-a-Lago’. Remember Jim Jones?
Why would a man who has continually denied the validity of the election results in 2020 — which he lost by a wide margin — a man who has not rebuked the assault on the Capitol on January 6th 2021, a man who could not join in the condemnation of a far right militant breaking into Nancy Pelosi’s home in San Francisco, looking for her while armed with a hammer (she wasn’t there) and then proceeding to beat up her husband causing skull fractures, why would then Trump still be considered presidential material?
And yet he is. In the mind of some Republicans he is the essence of Republicanism and worth ignoring his many flaws.
Well, Chris Christie is saying to them, ‘you’re in a bubble, all of you, and I’m going to burst it. Come back to reality. To govern this country we have to work with Democrats. To recapture the presidency we have to be willing to build bridges.
