The polls keep telling us that Biden is losing to Trump.
Do we believe the polls or not?
I have tended to dismiss them, believing that there are enough clear eyed Republicans to not support a candidate who favors isolating our nation, retreating from Ukraine and approving of a mass murderer like Putin.
But I may be wrong. Maybe there are not enough clear eyed Republicans to put the welfare of the nation ahead of party concerns.
You may not like Nikki Haley, the one lasting opponent to Trump’s quest for the nomination, but after some initial wishy washy behavior, she found the guts to come out and strongly oppose him on foreign policy. She didn’t get the numbers and will likely exit the contest after the results of next Tuesday’s primaries are in, but a lot of Republicans did vote for her.
I don’t think Democrats should find comfort in those numbers.
Trump has had legal setbacks but they’re not hurting his polls. The Supreme court may or may not rule that he had immunity concerning the insurrection on January 6th 2021, but none of that is likely to derail his becoming the Republican nominee.
Meanwhile he’s loving the mystique he’s building. He is the rebel, unjustly persecuted. The renegade people love. ‘Dear follower, I will not be deterred by the laws of this country. I will prevail and rewrite them with you in mind. I do it for you, I sacrifice for you, so we can take back this country from all the immigrants and war…
