The more pressing goal of providing for ourselves and family ends up governing most of our lives.
The larger goal — the one calling for committing to what may be uniquely distinctive in all of us — may not be easily discerned.
There are those who have talents that blossom early and recruit all the person’s energies.
But for most of us, identifying the larger goal may be a struggle.
It is well worth it.
In the process, a vital connection to self is forged.
This connection anchors and guides our energies, leads us to better self understanding, fosters tolerance of self and others and puts us on a path to personal freedom.
The task is not easy.
It takes effort and persistence.
But the rewards are abundant.
To reach a point when a person can say, ‘I’ve connected to who I am,’ implies that the person has done the work to understand what abilities they have.
The next step is to commit to those abilities — however many — with the intent of making them flourish.
Risk must be summoned to go through this stage. Still, our perception of what we’re capable of may not live up to our expectations.
But if we derive pleasure from the choice we’ve made, we’re likely on the right path.
We know we’re making a strong connection to something deep in ourselves when we begin to see that envy is leaving us.
To be able to accept the accomplishments of others and not resent them for it, is a sign of personal liberation.
