Looking Back at Past Choices

Never easy to do, but usually highly productive.
It does take some daring, some willingness to say, ‘it could’ve been way different if I had done this instead of that.’
It does take some guts to accept the regret and figure out how not to be burdened by it.
A measure of introspection is critical in managing regret for it sets up the opportunity for self repair.
We’re always self repairing in one way or another. ‘I did that and it didn’t work. What did I learn? Ok, I’ll do this other thing instead.’
The tissues in our bodies are constantly self repairing. Automatically. If not, we die.
The repair of our minds is not automatic, it takes conscious work.
We have to stop and think, ‘do I go there or not?’
But the more quickly we address our mistakes as we come up against them, the less likely they’ll drag us down as we move along. So an ongoing dialogue with ourselves is essential.
The process leads to the independence of our minds.
‘I am who I am, you are who you are.’
‘I will be glad to consider what you’re saying, but I must do my own reasoning to see how it fits with my views. Thank you for sharing.’
All of this can be taught at home while we’re growing up. But often it is not, because parents don’t have a clue, are too busy, or think it will be taught in school.
I never came across a course in critical thinking but maybe you did.
It would’ve made a world of difference in my life.
