It will be beautiful to watch.
Of course, for the committed, the outcome is irrelevant.
Those who know who Trump is, won’t vote for him even if his performance is brilliant.
If Harris performs poorly, we will vote for her anyway.
The debate, like the fund raising that so preoccupies campaign organizers, is for the purpose of swaying the undecided.
But there are lots of folks in that category.
That includes people who vote because it is a civic duty but have a distaste for politics — just thinking about it makes them ill.
It includes folks who have trouble making up their minds, which may be a significant number.
And those who live in a parallel universe and believe politics is a waste of time.
All these groups may find it expedient to simply tune in for the debate tomorrow and at the end they will know whom to vote for.
Therefore, the importance of a good performance for the candidates.
But Trump will lose tomorrow because he underestimates Harris.
And so he will likely be condescending and callous. And Harris will zing him for it.
Trump might then ask for a second debate but Harris should move on.
My take is that Harris has injected a sense of optimism about our future.
Trump cannot do that. It’s not in him. And the difference in styles will shine through.
We already know how Trump operates.
Harris is lowering barriers for people to join in the shaping of this country’s future.
