The mayor of New York has been indicted on corruption charges (bribery, illegal campaign donations, fraud).
He is accused of having exchanged favors with representatives of the Turkish government or people affiliated with it.
Adams denies the charges.
Various public officials and newspapers have called for his immediate resignation.
Kathy Hochul, the governor of the state, has the authority to remove him. She won’t.
She knows that the man needs his day in court, just like all of us if accused.
Adams has been in the thick of it since the start of his term which coincided with the onset of the Covid epidemic. In addition, he’s had to grapple with a huge inflow of foreigners who had been granted temporary asylum and ended up in Texas. Their Governor, Greg Abbott, would have none of it, and quickly put them in buses and sent them to New York. Let a democratic state deal with it.
So Adams has had a busy agenda.
New elections for mayor in New York will be held next year. If this matter is not settled in his favor before then, he’ll be under a big cloud, which will likely lead to his defeat at the polls.
It does not look good for Adams. But he must have his day in court.
He went from police officer to borough president in New York city, to state senator to mayor.
And it seems that along the way, he didn’t make a single good friend or kept one he had from before.
Someone who wanted nothing from him except his friendship.
Someone…
