Democracy is Anathema to Trump

And yet, the contest for President is very close.
How can that be?
How can it be that a man who is antidemocratic and doesn’t hide it one bit, could possibly stand a chance to be elected president of a democracy?
Trump doesn’t believe in anything. Nothing at all. What he believes in is Trump. He believes in his lust for power and his capacity to deceive.
And so he’ll say whatever he needs to say to get elected.
Is it easier to stir up resentment in people? Then that’s what he will do.
Is it easier to encourage people to devalue others and call them names? He will go there.
He relishes bringing out the worst in us, as if saying, ‘I want to bring you to my level. Yes. I want you to be steeped in anger. Hate, please! And enjoy it. Yes, hate your fellow Americans. I give you permission to indulge your rage for your brothers and sisters.’
The more he insults the more he loves it.
But is that what our nation needs?
Doesn’t our country need healing?
Is that so hard to see?
America needs a leader to excite compassion, creative drive, tolerance, all of which are way out of Trump’s range.
And yet, look at how much support he’s managed to elicit.
A democracy such as ours needs constant dialogue to resolve misunderstandings, to identify and process envy, and so bring out the best in us.
Trump can’t do it.
What his language reveals is a desire to punish and mistreat.
So he calls Kamala Harris retarded (she beat him soundly…
