Increasing age is a problem, more so for some than for others.
You have insisted on being reelected because, having beat Trump once, you could do it again.
But your performance in the debate yesterday was deficient.
You lacked vigor and speed.
Your opponent, Trump, has aged differently. He came across as far more vital than you did.
Under different circumstances, we might say that a debate does not make a president, but yesterday was different. We are only 4 months away from election day.
And while there is another debate scheduled for September, the deficiencies you showed are unlikely to be overcome by then and may, instead, become worse.
I watched with sadness in my heart.
You have done a good job as president but, under pressure from Trump, you couldn’t affirm it and retaliate effectively.
You were slow and tentative and I don’t think another debate will be any different.
At times it felt like you had not been able to sleep well the night before.
Trump saw it and ran with it.
He lied and lied, discounting all the good work you’ve done, and you couldn’t stop him.
Given your age, some of us had wanted that you undergo a cognitive test. You never consented to it. Well, your performance last night was the cognitive test.
Last night, we democrats felt the taste of defeat.
And we remembered the awful feeling of Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016.
But we do not deserve another Trump term.
